I'm currently in the process of putting together a new book, Remain Vigilant, which will be the first in an ongoing series collecting all the work I've done (and continue to do) with Justin Greaves/Crippled Black Phoenix. This first volume will include art originally produced for t-shirts and posters, as well as all the comic pages produced for the album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape (in an altered format as the album pages also included all the song notes, credit info, and more). The End Of The Beginning

Back in 2007 I started working on a comic titled "Lonely Monsters". Initially it was going to be a mini-series, but then evolved into a 140 page graphic novel. One of the characters created for the book was a gas mask wearing gentleman named "Leroy", who was initially going to die a few pages after he appeared. That changed however, and he went on to become the main character of the story, and is the central character of a new comic series that I'm currently working on.

But a lot has changed since Lonely Monsters was made, both in relation to the character of Leroy and my own approach to art and writing. The new series delves into his past, present, and also presents a small taste of his future. The character has grown into something far beyond my initial plans for him (which were simply me wanting to draw a slightly unhinged guy in a hoodie, gas mask and sneakers). For these and a number of other reasons Lonely Monsters will soon be ending its run as a published comic.

It's been a fun and interesting journey, and the book has traveled quite a bit. After selling out of the initial print run the book was put up on Lulu, where it outsold the initial run, before then going over to be part of FEC comics for their launch in early 2011. The current print run through FEC will be the final print run of Lonely Monsters in its current form, so if you're wanting to get a copy of Leroy's first comic appearance in print then this could possibly be your last chance.

And to make the final run a bit more interesting I'm going to run a competition (for anyone who already owns a copy of Lonely Monsters and anyone who now buys one). Email a photo of yourself holding the book to lonelymonsters(at)gmail.com and, once the final print run is sold out, I'll pull 2 photos out of a hat. The owner of the first photo will receive a page of original art from Lonely Monsters (which is a rare moment as I've clung onto most of the original art from the series), and the second person will receive a copy of the sold-out first printing of Lonely Monsters (which had over 50 pages of bonus art) that will have a sketch inside the front cover.

In the near future I'll start to share some of the work from the new Leroy comic. I'm incredibly excited about where this one is going, and I'm thrilled to have inker Mick Gray working with me on the flashback sequences that appear throughout the book. Mick's currently working on Batman & Robin, and has previously inked a number of my favourite comics including Promethea and Chase.

Thank you to everyone who has ever supported Lonely Monsters from day one. I hope you all stick for Leroy's next adventure, it's a doozy.

Last night I did the final bit of work that needed doing for the new Crippled Black Phoenix album. We started talking about the album art earlier in the year so this is the first day in a very long time that it's not part of my active "what do I need to do today" thought process. It's finished, the experience has been fantastic, and I can't wait to hold a physical copy of it all in my hands. I've also just finished putting together the poster for the band's European tour for 2012, which I'll post soon, but until then here's the front cover for (Mankind) The Crafty Ape (due for release at the end of January 2012).

The last couple of months for 2011 look to remain as busy as those preceding it. The 23BROKENMACHINES online exhibition continues to develop (more progress shots will start to appear on that blog in the coming weeks). I've got 2 new art books nearing completion. The first, SHIFT/PHASE, will be available in the next week or two. The second won't be available for sale publicly at this stage, but will be available in other ways (confused yet?).

2012 is gearing up to be an exciting year. I'm already talking with people about upcoming collaborations, including a new project with Justin Greaves of Crippled Black Phoenix, and a joint exhibition with one of my favourite Melbourne artists Kaitlin Beckett. I'll also have a few new comics out on the shelves, including the return of a certain gas masked chap......

Work on the new CBP album art will be wrapping up soon. It's been a fantastic project to be a part of, and there will be more of it in the future. It's a completely reworked book that I had started putting together earlier in the year, with a lot more now added to it.

I thought it would be fun to return to my first ever published comic story and redo it from scratch. It's not a simple case of re-drawing what's already there though. I've been able to find some more information on the old folk tale that the story was based on, so it's a total re-write and the final story is very different from the original. Throughout the preparation and showing of The Justice Will Be So Fantastic exhibition I received a lot of messages from people who don't dwell in Melbourne saying they wish they could attend. I've had some of those people also say that international shipping on large/framed/heavy items makes it difficult to buy some original art.

For quite some time I've been toying with the idea of doing an online-only exhibition, with all the art dropping in one big hit and being available to buy at the same time (unframed and easier to ship).

Seems like the perfect time to get this worked out. My focus is mostly on CBP-related work at the moment (which I'm having a total blast with), but over the next couple of months I'll be slowly putting together a new themed collection of work to post online, probably late November/early December.

Post-Exhibition Ramblings

A big thank you to everyone who made it along to last Friday's opening night for "The Justice Will Be So Fantastic". Response to the exhibition has been great. Artboy Gallery is the largest space I've exhibited in so far, and it was initially quite daunting as I started hanging the art on those long white walls. Thankfully I had the perfect amount of work completed, and it was a nice change for the art to have plenty of breathing room within a gallery set up.

Later this week I'll be posting photos of all the work from the show, until then here's a quick shot of one of my personal favourite pieces from it. This is 60cm x 55cm ink on wood. I'd worked on wood before (panels and skateboards) but always with paints. This was the first time I had used inks on wood and it turned out to be a very exciting medium to work with. I'll definitely be doing more of it in the future.

So what's next? The rest of September will be spent working on the art for the new Crippled Black Phoenix album as well as a couple of short comic stories for various upcoming anthologies. October I'll be getting a new art book together and diving much deeper into the new Leroy comic. And the wheels have already started turning for other things running through into 2012.

Just over 2 weeks to go til the exhibition launches. Still have a few pieces to finish up but I'll have them completed with time to spare. I'm going to have a few limited edition print sets available at the show as well (very limited, probably only 5 sets, possibly 10). The gallery have had some huge A0 posters made up to promote the show which I'll try and get some photos off soon.

I'm currently working on the art for the new CBP album, so it's pretty much non-stop CBP action in the studio at the moment, which is fine by me. Although once the exhibition work is completed I need to dive into a few short comic stories for different publishers before returning to continue working on the new Leroy comic.

Lonely Monsters, my first graphic novel (originally self-published and now available via FEC Comics) will soon be available in digital form for all you iPad/iPhone users. More info on this should be available soon. It will be joined by a few other comic bits and pieces, some of which have been out of print for awhile now.

Exhibition preparations continue to march forward. My current webcomic, The Secret History Of Skullboy, will be going on a short hiatus, returning in August, so I can focus solely on the exhibition as well as work on the new Leroy comic. I'll have some more news regarding the exhibition soon, along with a few teasers of some of the art from it.

We're just a few days out from the start of July, which also marks the beginning of a very busy last half of the year for me. The first half of the year has been quite a scattered one, with some bumps in the road, so I'm really excited about having a few projects to focus on for an extended period of time. These include the continued exhibition work, the new CBP album, 2 new Leroy comics, an as yet unnamed graphic novel, and a couple of other things that I can't talk about right now.

With a few hundred pieces of art currently being available on various art/POD sites I've decided it's time to go through and do a major cull of some work. Some of the older pieces are still relevant to what I'm doing/where I'm going, but other pieces seem like distant memories that serve no purpose and blur creative clarity. So over the next couple of weeks I'll be cutting a lot of them out (many of them will stay in the galleries of my website though, in an archive or sorts).

While my focus is dedicated to a couple of important projects at the moment I'm also starting to rough out ideas and themes for a new series of t-shirts and prints. Taking some themes I've previously worked with but pushing them in a different direction.

I've also got a few of my existing shirts going up at a new online t-shirt store soon. I'll post the website details when they launch.

I've been uploading regular new t-shirt designs to a few websites for the last couple of years, and with a few hundred designs now available I've decided to have a break from it. The designs I've put together for t-shirts are generally random "Hmmm, what do I feel like drawing today?" kind of things, and with 2011 being dedicated to an increased focus on long-term goals it just doesn't make sense to keep doing that. So from this point onwards I'll be taking a different approach to any t-shirts I do create.

I'll be selling most of them directly, generally linked in to larger projects, and they'll mostly be produced in limited numbers. The first of these designs, for the Sept exhibition, will be available in the next couple of weeks.

1/6 Toys

I've been collecting 1/6 scale toys for a few years now, mostly from the 3A range (one of the reasons I was so excited to have 3A come onboard as a sponsor for the September exhibition). Over the last couple of months I've been hunting down various items to use in customising the bodies 3A sent me for inclusion in the show. I'm down to a few items that I still need to track down, but have everything else I need so will be diving into the toy side of things soon.

My plan is to have all the toys set up in the one diorama display for the exhibition, but I'm still working out the technical side of things there.

I'll start posting regular images of the toys soon as they start to develop.

I was talking with someone yesterday about the reasoning behind keeping numerous projects active on a regular basis, and during the conversation realised that it's not always clear as to why a lot of artists do this. I assume the reasons are different from person to person, and for me it's the result of a number of things.

The main two reasons are motivation + efficiency. The greatest benefit to having multiple projects going at the same time is that you can bounce around between them. Sometimes the paint just doesn't want to land right, so I jump over to a comic page, and so on. Other times a project can hit a wall, and rather than waste all your time stressing about the situation you can channel that energy into something else while figuring out ways to break through that wall. By doing this you can remain focused and maintain a solid output of work.

I also find it helps to balance a range of long-term and short-term projects. Long-term projects can carry a range of issues with them, which can start to weigh you down a bit if it's your sole focus. But you can lift some of that weight by diving into a new t-shirt design or commission job, which are usually more freewheeling affairs. The short-term projects provide a more immediate pay-off (financially and psychologically) which can help to keep your spirits high.

The dream projects are those that include a combination of long and short term time frames, such as the work I've been doing with Crippled Black Phoenix. The various projects that fall under that banner offer me the opportunity to spread my creative wings and experiments across different themes and mediums.

Today is a great example of that, as I started by cutting out a stencil for the exhibition, then roughed out a new t-shirt idea, and am now moving over to listen to demo tracks while working on some concept sketches. After that I'll be working on one of the inkwash illustration pieces for the exhibition, coming back to the project I started the day with. A nice full circle with some exciting detours along the way.

That's a good day right there.

Exhibition Sponsorship

All sponsors for the exhibition are locked in, well ahead of time, which means I can spend the next few months focusing on the art side of things. It's great to be in this position as it can become very frustrating when, closer to an exhibition, your time gets derailed dealing with too much business. Osprey Skateboards have hooked me up with a stack of great skateboard decks which I'll be painting up for the "Night Raider" portion of the exhibition. White Rabbit are supplying a tonne of free beer for the opening in September.

I'm also incredibly excited to have 3A onboard, who are providing me with some of their amazing toys so I can produce some custom toys for the exhibition. 4PMART is a studio I run with my wife, and she'll be making the 1/6 scale clothing for the custom toys.

Had a break from CBP-related work today to get started on a new painting for an upcoming group exhibition at Artboy Gallery (where the CBP exhibition will also be). It's the second chapter in their Artboy VS Fanboy series of group shows, with this one being all about comics.

This one still has more work to go on it, but I'm happy with the direction it's heading.

What Goes Where?

When I decided to produce works based on the last 3 CBP albums I wanted to do it in a way where the art itself was unique to each album. I immediately decided on framed illustration pieces for I, Vigilante, my illustrative style just seemed a perfect fit for the mood and themes of that album.

For The Resurrectionists I decided to approach them in a medium I've been using more and more of late, acrylic + sprayed stencils on wooden boards (this lets me work in a much larger scale).

Night Raiders is the 1 that I'm still working out, but it will be acrylic paintings, and be on either skateboard decks or canvases.

I'm also working on a huge central piece, which will be spread across 3 large wooden panels to be displayed in the front window of the gallery. The gallery in question, Artboy Gallery, is a space I hooked up with in recent months. The space is fantastic, as is the man who manages it, so I'm really looking forward to having my only exhibition for this year being on their walls.

For previous exhibitions I've always used a piece of art from the show itself on all the promo material. While this works in regards to letting people know what's in store, it also means that when people visit the exhibition that piece loses a certain amount of impact as it's already been seen, on its own, outside of the context of the exhibition.

The image I'd previously posted was a work in progress to represent the song "Fantastic Justice", and while I like the central image the rest of it just wasn't sitting right with me. I also had a different idea for how to approach the song so decided to start on it from scratch.

Instead of the art being shoved away in cupboard I'll be making a few adjustments to it (adding some painted/stencil background elements) and will then use it on the promotional material. The hooded character will be appearing in a few of the pieces at the exhibition, so it's a good representation of the show in regards to theme and medium, but it means that anyone attending will be able to view all the art on hand with completely fresh eyes.

Everything I do generally starts life as an ink illustration, and from there I will often play around with colour themes in Photoshop before tackling it in the real world. Here's a quick colour sample (with possible text layout) for the exhibition poster.

The Justice Will Be So Fantastic is a collaboration with Crippled Black Phoenix. I'll be presenting 29 works in total, spanning the 3 albums Night Raider, The Resurrectionists, and I, Vigilante (1 piece per song, plus additional pieces representing each album as a whole and a centrepiece reflecting the entire exhibition).

To say I'm excited by this project would be a gross understatement. CBP's music has been a huge influence and inspiration for me and my art, and to be working closely with the band on this and other projects is a high point in my career (the highest point so far).

Fantastic Justice (WIP)

For this exhibition I'm producing visual adaptations of songs by Crippled Black Phoenix, some more literal than others. There will be 3 albums represented, with the above WIP being Fantastic Justice from the I, Vigilante album.
